Recently I declared war on a mini pony who lives at my house (I rent on a boarding facility) and although it was my fault that I left the gate open that allowed my dog to get out of my backyard and into the pasture where the large mini pony (large in comparison to my dog), whom I have nicknamed “Boxer” for his loyal and dimwitted personality, chased my dog around the field.  Yes, it was the most entertainment I had ever had at 4:30am, watching my dog being chased by a mini pony.  But there is something I do not trust about ponies that are so cute you are forced to stop and feed them sugar cubes, even though you can never ride them!!  Luckily for me, this woman has taught me that with nothing more than a pair of rollerblades, a quick release knot tied to my belt, and a bridle, I can successfully tame the beast!

This woman not only tells us that we can tame those crazy minis, but we can do it in the comfort of our own homes! Heck, we can even own white carpets without worry of the soil of horsie accidents!  (Being that I just shoveled poop in the rain for 30 min and slipped in mud/poop mixture, a horse that doesn’t poop sounds AMAZING!)  Now I don’t have to wait for Seattle rains to stop, nor that horrible summer heat that usually keeps me from going on a brisk trail ride.  Nope, now I can roll off the couch after watching 10 year old reruns of Buffy, and have the mini drag me to the bathroom with minimal movement! No more of that pesky walking!

I was always told not to rollerblade in the house or walk on the carpet with my paddock boots on when I was a kid, but I am sure my renters insurance will definitely cover a mini pony’s hoof to my TV.  TAKE THAT MOM!! Plus it makes vet’s “house calls” way more literal for them!!

Usually my thinking is that if your legs are dangling below the belly (and unfortunately I have majorly long legs, so my dreams of riding a pony have been dead for a long while) you should not ride the pony.  We now have the solutions!  With just a trusty pair of rollerblades and a few straps of miscellaneous materials I can finally live out my childhood dreams of riding a mini pony and winning all the blue ribbons!

This seemed a little harsh. This pony most likely lives outdoors and the owner just brought it inside for some fun. These little guys can be absolute joys when well trained and not spoiled. As for the “trainer” what she did was very safe, yes the little guy could have broken the house, but if we can trust these horses with blind people and potty train them, then this really shouldn’t be that big of a deal. While I enjoyed reading this it made me take a step back. The “rider’ is not actually riding the mini horse, but more straddling it.

You know, if this was outside and you weren’t tying yourself to the horse , this might actually be a semi acceptable way for adults to train mini’s without having to put weight on them, of course there’s also just hooking up driving reins and putting a weight in the saddle…… Anyway, I used to work at a mini show and breeding barn and I have to admit I once thought training a mini to pull me along via roller skates and two lead ropes was a great idea. (I was 12 and stupid) it went about as well as one would imagine. So yeah. Horses and roller skates are not a great plan- while it may have worked for this lady and her horse, that doesn’t mean that the whole of youtube should try it. Also mini’s can be holy terrors when they aren’t socialized properly and they are fully capable of destroying a great deal of things.

I agree it could be mildly acceptable only if you weren’t tied to the mini and were outside in a safe area. Not something everyone should run out and try but if this was the silly thing some people just HAD to do with their minis then I don’t think I’d complain.

2 words come to mind. Natural. Selection. If your to stupid to realize the danger that a mini horse is still, well a HORSE then you should be taken out of the gene pool. Horse that is shrunken down is still a horse, moron! Although I wish more idiots did this, help the natural selection processm yes?

All I can think is … WHY?! What are you trying to teach that pony? (Aside from the fact that you are an idiot… which said pony has already gathered by his attitude). Why would you do this? What is she trying to accomplish?? Just.. WHY????

I’m most concerned about the fact that the pony appears to be grazing on her carpet.

gosh. I hate it when kids try silly things.. Life would be better for this one if she were out on the street, you know… doing what REAL kids do – selling drugs, using drugs, drinking under age, selling her body, gang-banging..

I wish kids would stop being kids. Then you’d have all kinds of blog-worthy material.

  8. Not so funny when you know of several children who have been killed by tying ropes around their waist and the other end tied to a horse/pony. One little local girl died in the arms of her older sister after being dragged to her death. ( And PP has even suggested it as a way of being able to work with your horse so you can keep your hands free – idiot! ) I have minis, and while they are cute, they have all the same reactions as big horses do, they are not puppies and one well placed kick can kill a child. They are strong little critters for their size.

  9. My thought after showing this to the husband…

…that if you really want your mini to pull you around on blades, take up skijoring! You’d be better off with ‘grass skis’ than roller blades, but a mini could easily do it (Many people use larger dogs).

As ignorant as this is. . .I think we have seen a /lot/ more wretched things done with minis. Okay, not the smartest thing to do, and someone should explain to her why this is potentially dangerous (and damaging to her mini) but I do like she specified a quick release knot and was obviously trying to keep a great deal of weight off the little guy.

As far as bringing a mini into a house >> Our little guy came indoors for a partial clip one very muddy spring day. . .then again, my mother does true pet therapy work with him and has been in and out of schools, nursing homes, hospitals. . .you name it. Yes, insurance on the off chance of a terrible accident. . .and she is well aware something can happen .. .so are the people who ask her to come in. Our biggest issue is his constantly trying to sniff out trash cans for treats and pawwing at the floor cause he is bored of standing still. In something like 8 years there has never been an accident beyond ‘oh look. . .trash can that smells interesting. . .’ completely ignoring whatever noisy beeping machine is rolling down the aisle.
