O_o I think the rider created all the lift for the pony to get over the fence.

  2. That thing should be doing something more appropriate to dragonDRIVING…it’s adorable!

What the [fuzzy bunny] kind of tack does she have on?! A barely there saddle pad and a dressage saddle? On the website what is up with her stirrups? If that’s the “young jockey” then why is she riding in a dressage saddle?

Well it is obviously a faux sheepskin half pad (not numnah) and a rather old working hunter saddle (uk remember), at least the kid has a decent skull cap on and appropriate boots. Won’t comment on the chavtastic bridle arrangement though. But as an afterthought the saddle style is irrelevant, if the kid can ride a couple of inches extra knee roll won’t make much difference.

Thank you for pointing out the oh-so-obvious half pad and the fact that hunt saddles have been made with less forward flaps than today’s jump saddles. And really, when it’s a kid going over cavelleti, who cares what style saddle she’s using? I’ve done actual jumps in a/p’s, cc’s, western, dressage saddles, and completely bareback. At least this girl is wearing a helmet and has her heels down. :D

I think the spirit of this post needs to be made more clear… if this is just supposed to be a cute picture, fine, I just hope you’re not actually snarking on a small child for having flying beginner chicken wings! This is a cute pony who looks well cared for, jump is appropriately tiny, kid’s got a helmet on, nice deep heels, all looks good except for a very common and easily corrected beginner fault. Let she who never had a flying chicken wing moment when learning to jump cast the first snark!

I’m a middle ager learning to jump for the past few months and I still do the funky chicken when I think too hard about my heels. I have reverted to clucking in response to my poor form before my instructor can open his mouth – kind of like cutting him off at the pass. Baaaawk, baaaawk. It happnes… what the cluck?

She’s just helping the pony get over the fence with her elbows. You know, like when you open your mouth when you’re spoon feeding a baby :) )

Oh good god… the 3 year old ‘driving’ colt being run out on pavement and already pulling carts… the unhelmeted toddler sitting on a 2 year old colt being held by another child…. one of those driving colts looks to just be a yearling, pulling a cart all inverted…. oh.. make that two yearling colts broke to drive and pulling carts whilst forced into a high headed inverted frame. Sickening. And that’s all just on the first page of listings.

    • It LOOKS like they’re selling classified ad space on their site rather than breaking yearlings (VERY rare in the UK, I’d add, there are no 2yo futurities over there outside of racing) themselves.

Dragon Driving sells advertising space, they themselves are a reputable driving stables who sell carriages and harness. I don’t see the point of this post either – you’re obviously running out of material if you have to pick on small children learning how to jump!

Unfortunately they seem to have a lot of advertisers who fall into the pikie (modern gypsy) category who have lost much of their gypsy knowledge to do with horses. They now feel they should have horses as it’s their ‘right’ and ‘heritage’. The breeding of gyspy cobs that used to be ok has now degenerated. They tend to work them hard and young on tarmac roads, as road racing is now popular amongst ‘gypsies’. They don’t really have a clue when it comes to modern horsemanship, they do it their own way which usually doesn’t involve empathy, kindness, or riding helmets!

I guess I should head over to that website…
I only wanted to add, that there are all purpose saddles that have a real “dressage” leaning to them.. IE they appear very dressage saddle like, but do have knee rolls, where as a true dressage saddle does NOT have knee rolls.
I bought one for $30 bucks at a tack sale earlier this year.
AND the “almost not there pad” is in actuality a half pad, sold either thru stores or the web simply look up english saddle pads.
Which I say is some what better than what you see saddle seat riders do, now not all of them do. But you can see pics where the horse has NO saddle pad on at all in shows…

    • A saddle pad is not as essential as many Americans think. If the saddle is properly fitted (often far too sadly neglected) then it is perfectly fine to ride without a pad as long as you don’t mind the extra work of cleaning the naked saddle. I rode without a pad in shows all the time as a teenager, and my horse never got saddle sores or showed any discomfort from it.

There’s nothing cruel about riding without a pad or blanket. There IS something cruel about riding in an improperly fitted saddle. Too often I see people using a pad, half pad or riser pad to compensate for the fact that the saddle doesn’t remotely fit…and sometimes you don’t have to be a saddle fitter to tell, either.

That was my understanding as well… assuming the saddle fits well, the main purpose of the pad is simply to keep sweat off the saddle, and going without was much more common in the U.K. than North America. I attributed all the things that looked a little odd about the tack to me, to the fact that the photo from the U.K.

I really see nothing remotely snark-worthy in this photo… especially considering the same site has a big man riding a yearling.

I gotta agree with the sweat thing the most! (Assuming your saddle fits the horse) Would you wear your riding boots in the summer without socks? I would, but I prob would not enjoy it half as much!

I’d say my mini snark on that ad was that the pony is advertised as a “grey and blue” coloured mare; is the bridle being counted as part of the coat colour? Also, there’s nothing wrong with having a bad jump and bringing your hands up in the exact opposite direction as they should actually be going (and I’m sorry, but how hard is it to ask someone to grab mane when there is SO MUCH of it to choose from??), but that “whoops” jump should not be used in a sales ad… and if one cannot capture a nice jump in a photograph, then maybe one should simply use the (extremely) cute under saddle photos and forgo the 1′ jump pic.
